TITLE: PLUMBER/WATER
TREATMENT OPERATOR
CLASS DEFINITION:
General Statement of Duties:
To install, inspect, and repair
water, sewer, and other plumbing systems; to insulate piping systems; to perform
operational activities and make decisions regarding the daily operational
activities of a public water treatment facility and transmission and
distribution system that may directly impact the safety, security, quality and
quantity of drinking water; and to do related work as required.
Supervision Received:
Receives general and specific
work assignments from a superior with considerable latitude for the use of
independent judgment in the application of the practices and techniques of the
trade; work is reviewed, usually upon completion, for satisfactory performance.
Supervision Exercised:
As required, supervises the work of helper or others assigned to assist in performance of a work assignment.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
PERFORMED:
PLUMBER
DUTIES:
Under general supervision, to install, inspect, and repair water and sewer systems, including lavatory facilities, faucets, drinking fountains, sprinkler systems, and cafeteria equipment.
To
install, inspect, and repair compressed air lines.
To
cut, thread, and bend pipes according to requirements.
To
keep all power equipment and hand tools of the trade in good working condition.
As
required, to requisition supplies tools.
As
required, to keep materials and time records.
To operate, monitor, or inspect and maintain a water treatment facility
on a daily basis, including all sensors, pumps, vales, injectors, and monitors.
To add chemical-hydrated line in dry powder form to hopper in order to
obtain/maintain proper pH.
WATER
TREATMENT OPERATOR DUTIES:
To monitor proper mixing in dissolver tank through calculated delivery of lime in dry form and the metered flow of potable cold water.
To perform daily operating inspections to ensure automated electronic flow control vales, chemical feed pumps, solenoid vales, delivery piping, and electronic control board are all functioning properly.
To
calibrate and adjust stroke and speed settings on chemical feed pump as
required.
To
periodically take offline, disassemble and clean the dissolver tank and related
piping valves and
equipment
system in order to maintain them.
To
monitor on a daily basis, the charts and graphs for record keeping and for
adjustment of pH level
in
the distribution system.
To
verify the accuracy of pH monitors through water sampling and testing.
To
insure that the security and safety of the public water drinking system is not
compromised.
DISTRIBUTION
SYSTEM DUTIES:
To operate distribution system so that the quality of water does not deteriorate between treatment facility and the customer.
To perform semi-annual flushing of distribution system to remove any sediment and to exercise fire hydrants.
To make repairs to distribution system as necessary.
To disinfect system as required.
To chart and record water usage on a daily basis.
To install and maintain back flow preventers.
To periodically clean and unclog sewage mains and manholes as necessary.
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
Knowledge, Skills, and Capacities:
A thorough
knowledge of the practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in
the plumbing trade, and skill in the application of such practices and
techniques; skill in the use of the tools and equipment used in the plumbing
trade; a working knowledge of relevant safety measures and precautions; the
ability to work from plans and specifications, and to follow rough sketches and
oral written instructions; knowledge of the operation of a water treatment
facility and associated transmission and distribution system; and other related
capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
Such as may have been gained through: possession of a high school degree or
equivalency; and a minimum of ten credit hours of instructions in the operation
of a water treatment facility and associated transmission and distribution
system (to be updated on an annual basis).
Experience:
Such as may have been gained through:
employment as a journeyman plumber.
Or,
any combination of education and experience that shall be
substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
Special
Requirement:
Must possess a journeyman plumber’s license in the State of
