CLASS TITLE: REFRIGERATION MECHANIC (LICENSED)
CLASS DEFINITION:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To be responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of commercial and household refrigeration and ice-making units at a large state institution; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives instructions from a superior; usually makes own decisions as to methods and techniques to be used in the performance of duties; work is reviewed upon completion for results obtained.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
To be responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of commercial and household refrigeration and ice-making units, using a variety of gases, such as ammonia, sulphur dioxide, methyl chloride and freon.
To make routine inspections of compressors and motors in the units.
To lubricate bearings and moving parts.
To adjust brushes and make minor repairs to motors.
As required, to operate, maintain and repair a small ice-making plant.
To make necessary adjustments to ice-making and refrigeration motors to assure proper operation.
To make minor repairs to electrical appliances and plumbing, steam and gas systems.
To assist in general maintenance work about the institution.
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
A thorough knowledge of the practices, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration and ice-making units and skill in the application of such practices and techniques; a working knowledge of safety measures and precautions; a familiarity with the electrical and plumbing trades; skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in refrigeration; the ability to make adjustments and minor repairs to motors of refrigeration and ice-making units; the ability to read and interpret diagrams and blueprints; the ability to operate a small ice-making plant; the ability to follow oral and written instructions; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION:
Such as may have been gained through completion of ten school grades; and
EXPERIENCE:
Such as may have been gained through employment as a refrigeration mechanic.
OR- any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
At the time of appointment must meet the mandatory technician certification program requirements incorporated in section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990 as amended, including final regulations published on May 14, 1993 (58 FR 28660) and must maintain such certification as a condition of employment; must possess a refrigeration mechanics license issued by the State of Rhode Island and must maintain such licensure as condition of employment; at the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.
