The University of Rhode Island
College of Pharmacy provides consultative healthcare services through
the HUMC. The program utilizes faculty, health care consultants and
affiliated healthcare executives to provide creative, cost-effective
solutions to the issues faced by private and public sector businesses.
An extensive range of services are provided by the HUMC in a variety of
areas, including pharmacy benefit management, data analysis, project
management, health care insurance procurement, health services
evaluation, health policy development and disease state management.
This program has a documented history of successful partnership with a
variety of business entities, as well as the successful implementation
of initiatives designed to manage costs and improve quality of care.
RI
Department of Corrections (RIDOC)
This experiential rotation allows
the Pharm.D. candidate access to a unique and challenging area of
pharmacy practice in the state’s prison system. Based at the HUMC in
Fogarty Hall and RI Department of Corrections facilities in Cranston,
students will experience first hand the practice of pharmacy in a
distinctive managed care setting. In addition to working with Pharm.D.
candidates on the HUMC advanced clinical clerkship rotation,
students at RIDOC are expected to interact with nurses and physicians in
the RIDOC medical clinics, as well as with Brown University medical
students on rotation at RIDOC. On a daily basis students will be
assigned to and involved with projects based on the needs of RIDOC which
might include legislation and regulation development and compliance,
policies and procedures research, formulary assistance and revision,
clinical reviews, financial and purchasing reporting, pharmacy and
therapeutics (P&T) committee support, data collection and guideline
development, and development of educational programs for nurses, medical
students, and inmates. Site visits to correctional facility pharmacy
fulfillment centers, federal prisons and the RI State Legislature are
also possible. All students who elect to partake in this rotation will
be required to undergo BCI and NCIC background checks. Access to an
automobile is also required.
Residencies
Residencies for graduates of Doctor of
Pharmacy programs are available through the HUMC. These programs allow
participants the opportunity to develop applied pharmacoeconomic and
clinical decision making skills in a managed care setting. Residents
learn formulary design, economic analysis, disease state management and
research and analysis techniques over the course of their one year
program. The residency program emphasizes the applied use of managed
care pharmacy knowledge. Stipends are provided and tuition remission
may be available.
Post-Doctoral Fellowships
A limited number of post-graduate research
fellowships are available through the HUMC. This program provides
contracted services to state agencies, health insurers and other sectors
of the healthcare marketplace. Applicants have the opportunity to
collaborate with faculty, adjunct faculty, and consultants in a variety
of academic and applied managed care pharmacy environments. Stipends
are provided depending upon the availability of funding.
