Course Planning Workshops
The IDP annually offers Course
Planning Workshops, a series of five half-day sessions held the week before
fall semester classes begin. Each session focuses on a different aspect of
instructional planning: understanding today's students, presenting and
explaining, getting students involved, testing and grading, and meeting the
first class.

Introduction to Teaching and Learning for Graduate
Teaching Assistants in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
disciplines
Co-sponsored by the IDP, The
Graduate School, and participating departments, this annual workshop series
meets four afternoons during the week before fall classes begin. Half of each
workshop is devoted to microteaching sessions in which TAs practice specific
teaching skills in small groups, are videotaped, and
receive feedback from faculty and peers.
Other Workshops
During the academic year, the IDP sponsors
more focused workshops, seminars, and book discussions on a variety of topics.
In the past, workshop topics have included learning styles, large classes,
collaborative learning, problem-based learning, learning from reading, to
mention a few. Typically, these sessions meet 3 to 5 times during the semester
-- often enough to permit substantive discussion about specific issues or
approaches and in enough depth so that faculty can decide if they want to
pursue topics further.
