Top IEP German Majors Invited to Join Honor Society

Kingston, R.I.--March 25, 2010--Top IEP German Majors Invited to Join Honor Society

Studying German at the University of Rhode Island has never proved more gratifying than now.

6 out of 7 University of Rhode Island students studying German invited to join the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society are members of the International Engineering Program (IEP).

“It has been a banner year for German majors in the International Engineering Program at URI,” says Dr. Damon Rarrick, assistant professor of German at the University of Rhode Island. “These students should be urged to accept the invitation and to take advantage of this honors society.”

The Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society was founded in 1776 and has grown to include half a million living members. Most students hail from well-known and academically rigorous universities. The 6 IEP students, if they choose to join the Society, would add their name to a list of prominent persons; among them are Daniel Webster, John Foster Dulles, Nelson Rockefeller, Bill Clinton, Ashley Judd, and Jennifer Granholm to name a few.

“This is quite an honor,” says Tony Amante Schepers, coordinator of the International Engineering Program at URI. “Most Phi Beta Kappa members do not study a foreign language and engineering. To be from the sciences and join is really a knock-out.”

The following students were recently invited to join the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society. These students are dual-degree majors, with studies in German and Engineering.

Patrick Hartnett, a senior civil engineering and German major. He interned at Zublin in Stuttgard in 2009.

Patrick Eads, a junior computer science and German major. He is currently interning at BMW in Munich.

Amy Gibson, a junior chemical engineering and German major. She is currently interning at Boehringer Ingelheim Microparts in Dortmund.

Kyrsten O'Leary, a senior Electrical Engineering & German major. She interned at BMW in Munich in 2009.

Alex Pytka, a senior chemical engineering German major. He interned at PolyC in Furth in 2009.

Jarred Serpa, a senior mechanical engineering & German major. He interned at MTU in 2009.
