Dr. Bustani is currently the President at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, ITESM (Monterrey Tech) in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area. Before he was Dean of Engineering from 1998 to 2001. He started the Center for Environmental Quality at Monterrey Tec in 1992 where he stayed as the Director of the Center from 1992 to 1998. Before starting this center he was Chairman of of the Chemical Engineering Department from 1987 to 1992. Prior to coming to ITESM, Dr. Bustani was development manager in the area of direct reduction of iron ores at HYL a Steel Company based in Monterrey.

He earned his PhD (1987) at University of Sheffield in England in the area of fuel technology. His bachelor's degree is from ITESM in chemical engineering.

Dr. Bustani's research area is related to environmental and energy policy; technology; and business and trade, particularly in the environmental field. In these areas he has organized and carried out several studies, has published several papers and has been awarded one patent.

Dr. Bustani is coauthor of the Mexico's Status Report on Pollution Prevention for the North American Commission on Environmental Cooperation. He is also author of the paper "Consciousness of Social Responsibility under the NAFTA" ; presented at the Aspen Institute in October 1999.

In 1991 he was awarded by ITESM for his academic and research work. In 1992 he was awarded the Romulo Garza Prize on research and development.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
