Kara Callahan, Assistant Director of Engineering, Smith College

Kara Callahan joined the newly established Picker Engineering Program at Smith College (the first and only women’s college in the United States to offer an engineering program) in August 2001. Ms. Callahan is a Smith College alumna (A.B. Mathematics) who went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. Ms. Callahan spent nearly a decade as an engineer in the power industry building and refurbishing power plants and analyzing power systems before coming to Smith. In her previous career, she had the wonderful experience of working and living internationally – as her job took her to almost all corners of the globe (Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and North America). In her work to help develop the Picker Engineering Program, Ms. Callahan is dedicated to bringing both her professional experience and her perspective from her international work to her students by creating opportunities for them to study and work abroad.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
