Rachel Starr was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and has lived in New Hampshire since the age of four. She is currently in her fifth year at the University of Rhode Island, completing a BS in Biomedical Engineering and a BA in German. Through URI's International Engineering Program, she attended the Technische Universität Braunschweig last Fall followed by a six month internship at Siemens Medical Solutions, Forchheim, Germany.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
