 Workshops:  Pre- and Post-Conference
 
The faculty of the URI International Engineering Program, along with several colleagues from other institutions, will sponsor two pre-conference workshops beginning with lunch on Thursday afternoon, October 24, and one post-conference workshop on Sunday morning, October 27. The topics will be Teaching Foreign Languages to Engineers, Teaching Cross-Cultural Communication, and Getting Started.

Pre-Conference Workshops will be held from 12:00 - 4:30 PM on October 24 in our conference hotel, the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, Rhode Island. (Shuttle transportation from the airport to the hotel is also provided.)
  • Workshop 01: Teaching Foreign Languages to Engineering Students: Offered by Dr. Damon Rarick and Dr. Walter von Reinhart, University of Rhode Island
  • Workshop 02: Teaching Cross-Cultural Communication: Offered by Nardina Alongi and Matthew West of The Language House, Greenville, South Carolina

Post-Conference Workshops will be held Sunday morning from 8:00 - 12:00 on October 27 in the conference hotel.

  • Workshop 03: Getting Started: Building International Engineering Programs: Offered by experts from several institutions, with a focus on
    • Networking at your home institution
    • Finding funding
    • Deciding on an appropriate model
    • Building an internship program
    • Finding partners abroad

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
