Eckhard GrollProfessor Eckhard A. Groll received his German Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Ruhr in Bochum, Germany, in 1989. As part of his diploma studies, he spent 1988 as a foreign exchange student at Texas A&M University. For this stay, he was awarded a DAAD scholarship. He received a German Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Hannover, Germany, in 1994. Part of his doctoral studies were conducted at the University of Maryland. He joined the faculty at Purdue University as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1994 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000. Professor Groll’s research interest focuses on the fundamental thermal sciences as applied to advanced HVAC&R systems, components, and their working fluids. Since joining Purdue, he has graduated six doctoral students and seventeen master students and advised four visiting scholars and eight exchange students. Currently, he advises seven Ph.D. candidates, three master students, and three visiting scholars. He has authored or co-authored 32 archival journal articles and 48 conference papers. He was the co-author of two handbook chapters and the editor or co-editor of five conference proceedings. His research support since joining Purdue totals $2.8 million from various organizations such as ASHRAE and ARTI, and the HVAC&R industries. In 1997, he received the ASHRAE New Investigator Award. In 2002, he received the Solberg Award for best teacher in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and was named a Senior Resource Faculty for the Teacher for Tomorrow Award Program at Purdue University during the academic year 2002/2003. In 2003, he received a Guest Professorship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for his sabbatical stay at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, from January 1 to July 31, 2003, as the resident director for six Purdue exchange students that participate in a new, combined international internship and study abroad program.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
