Professor
Eckhard A. Groll received his German Diploma in Mechanical
Engineering from the University of the Ruhr in Bochum, Germany,
in 1989. As part of his diploma studies, he spent 1988 as a
foreign exchange student at Texas A&M University. For this stay,
he was awarded a DAAD scholarship. He received a German
Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Hannover,
Germany, in 1994. Part of his doctoral studies were conducted at
the University of Maryland. He joined the faculty at Purdue
University as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering
in 1994 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000.
Professor Groll’s research interest focuses on the fundamental
thermal sciences as applied to advanced HVAC&R systems,
components, and their working fluids. Since joining Purdue, he
has graduated six doctoral students and seventeen master
students and advised four visiting scholars and eight exchange
students. Currently, he advises seven Ph.D. candidates, three
master students, and three visiting scholars. He has authored or
co-authored 32 archival journal articles and 48 conference
papers. He was the co-author of two handbook chapters and the
editor or co-editor of five conference proceedings. His research
support since joining Purdue totals $2.8 million from various
organizations such as ASHRAE and ARTI, and the HVAC&R
industries. In 1997, he received the ASHRAE New Investigator
Award. In 2002, he received the Solberg Award for best teacher
in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and was named a
Senior Resource Faculty for the Teacher for Tomorrow Award
Program at Purdue University during the academic year 2002/2003.
In 2003, he received a Guest Professorship from the German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for his sabbatical stay at the
University of Karlsruhe, Germany, from January 1 to July 31,
2003, as the resident director for six Purdue exchange students
that participate in a new, combined international internship and
study abroad program.
