Matthew J. Arner, Heliotronics
Mr. Arner, Manager of Business Development, Heliotronics, Inc., received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1998. After working two years for Accenture Consulting as a management consultant to large industrial clients, he attended the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University and completed his M.A. in Sustainable International Development in 2002.

Having developed an interest in renewable energy, Mr. Arner worked in Kathmandu, Nepal as a Business Development Consultant with Wisdom Light Group, a solar photovoltaic manufacturer delivering solar electric systems to the rural areas of the Himalayan region. After returning to the United States, he joined Heliotronics as Manager of Business Development. Heliotronics is a small startup company that makes data monitoring systems for the renewable energy industry. Mr. Arner is also the Program Manager for the MassEnergy Consumer’s Alliance solar energy installation program, a board member of the Boston Area Solar Energy Association, a member of the Fenway Solar Energy Committee.

As an undergraduate student at WPI, Mr. Arner completed two projects in Europe. The first was with Lucent Technologies on the topic of international management cultures. The second was a laboratory research project for Airbus Industries. When Mr. Arner returned to WPI he founded the Global Ambassadors, a student group promoting WPI’s international programs. He has remained involved with WPI by sponsoring student projects related to renewable energy.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
