Grandin is professor of German and director of the International Engineering Program at the University of Rhode Island, a double-degree option leading simultaneously to the BS in one of the engineering disciplines and the BA with a major in German, French, or Spanish. Grandin has competed successfully for several major grants supporting international engineering efforts at the University of Rhode Island, has published numerous articles on the subject, and is founder and organizer of the Annual Colloquium on International Engineering Education held in Rhode Island each fall. Grandin is a recipient of the Federal Cross of Honor from the German government, the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Association of Teachers of German and the ABET Educational Innovation Award, all pertaining to his efforts to internationalize engineering education. In a prior life, Grandin authored several articles and a book on Franz Kafka.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
