Juan
Lucena is Associate Professor at the Liberal Arts
and International Studies Division (LAIS) at the
Colorado School of Mines. Juan obtained a Ph.D. in
Science and Technology Studies (STS) from Virginia
Tech and a MS in STS and BS in Mechanical and
Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer. Sponsored
by the NSF, he researches how globalization shapes
engineering education, hiring practices, and
engineering practices and designs and is currently
co-developing, evaluating, and disseminating
curricula on the cultural dimensions of engineering
education and practice in the industrialized
nations, the Middle East, and the developing world.
He is also the lead investigator in a project titled
Enhancing Engineering Education through
Humanitarian Ethics aimed at developing a
graduate component of humanitarian engineering at
CSM. His book, Defending the Nation: U.S.
Policymaking in Science and Engineering Education
from Sputnik to the War against Terrorism, was
published this year. Currently, Dr. Lucena serves as
a Boeing Senior Fellow in Engineering Education at
the National Academy of Engineering.
