Dr. Bahram
Nassersharif is Dean of the College of Engineering
at the University of Rhode Island and Professor of Mechanical
Engineering and Applied Mechanics. Dean Nassersharif has executive
responsibility for the College and provide leadership for
its academic, research and outreach programs. The URI College
of Engineering includes the departments of chemical engineering,
civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer
engineering, industrial and manufacturing engineering, mechanical
engineering, and ocean engineering. It currently enrolls over
1000 undergraduate students and 170 graduate students, and
employs 107 faculty, researchers and support staff. Approximately
19% of engineering students at URI are in the dual degree
International Engineering Program.
Dr. Nassersharif joined URI in 2003 after serving as Department
Head of Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico State University.
He also was the Director of the Graduate Distance Education
Programs at New Mexico State University and the Director of
the Title V Program, a faculty development program funded
by the US Department of Education, designed to improve students’
academic performance through active learning, computer-assisted
instruction and multimedia classrooms.
Dr. Nassersharif earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in
Nuclear Engineering from Oregon State University. His research
and teaching interests are in the fields of Nuclear Systems,
Heat Transfer, Computational Mechanics, and Non-Destructive
Testing. He has also provided leadership in accreditation
of engineering programs and curriculum renovation. External
sponsors of his research and educational initiatives include:
Boeing, General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, National Science
Foundation, US Department of Education, US Department of Energy,
Delphi Automotive Systems, Electric Power Research Institute,
Maxson Paper Products, General Dynamics/Electric Boat, and
NASA. Dr. Nassersharif is the recipient of the NSF Presidential
Young Investigator Award and a Fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science.
