  Debbie Pearson

Debbie Pearson, Assistant Director in the Division of Professional Practice at the Georgia Institute of Technology, works with cooperative education students in the aerospace and mechanical engineering fields.  Her responsibilities include counseling students, developing jobs, assessing the effectiveness of co-op assignments, serving on the co-op administration team, and assisting with Work Abroad efforts.

During 2005-06, Ms. Pearson participated in several conferences and co-authored two papers: Cooperative Education: A Proven Cornerstone for Developing Tomorrow’s Space Workforce and Developing Globally-Minded Engineers through Education and Experience: An Examination of International Co-op/Internship Models. At the Ninth Annual Colloquium on International Engineering Education, Ms. Pearson will co-facilitate a session on Preparing Interns and Co-ops for the Work Abroad Experience.

Having traveled to various countries, Ms. Pearson is interested in cross-cultural issues and the benefits that international experiences hold for engineering students.  Ms. Pearson completed a Bachelor’s Degree in English Education and a Master's Degree in English, along with counseling certification, from Troy University.  Before joining the Division of Professional Practice in 1998, she served various educational institutions through teaching, counseling, administration, and project coordination.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
