Post-Conference Workshops

1) Teaching Languages to Engineers

This workshop provides information, teaching strategies and lessons learned for teaching engineering majors foreign languages at all levels of instruction. The workshop will be held in English, including discussion and explanation of all examples and illustrations (which are primarily written in German).  A review of materials and 120+ page handout with exercises, syllabi, articles, teaching ideas, etc. will be provided to participants.

When : Sunday Morning, November 9, from 8:30 – Noon

Where : At the conference hotel

Presenters: Damon Rarick (URI) and Walter von Reinhart (URI)

Attendees: Any registered conference participant may attend this workshop. But, pre-registration for the workshop is required.

  

 
2) Transitioning into the Global Workplace

 

This workshop will present best practices to prepare students for the global work place, as interns as well as for general employment. It presents training and assessment modules for intercultural learning before and after the study or work abroad period, as well as surveys, and examples how the international experience can be integrated into the curriculum. MIT's International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) and Georgia Tech's International Plan will share their experiences in training and assessing students. We will also hear recommendations for recruiting on US campuses and have an HR strategy manager from Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) talk about his company's international strategy.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
