History and Purpose

The purpose of the Annual Colloquium on International Engineering Education is to provide engineering and language educators, international program administrators, deans, provosts, presidents, corporate leaders, as well as public sector representatives an interdisciplinary forum for discussing and sharing ideas and practices pertaining to the education of American engineers for today's global workplace.

This distinctive and unique annual colloquium meets every other year in Rhode Island, alternating with partner schools across the country. The 2005 meeting was held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta; the 2006 meeting was in Newport, Rhode Island, while the 2007 colloquium was held at Purdue University.  The 2008 colloquium will be held once again in scenic Newport, Rhode Island, November 6-9.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
