Tom McLaughlin attended the University of Rhode Island from 1986 to 1991, completing a Bachelor of Arts in German and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He was a member of the first graduating class of the International Engineering Program (IEP).

As part of the curriculum, Tom completed internships with Hoechst AG in Rhode Island and at Hoechst Germany. After graduating, Tom spent four years in Texas as process engineer for Hoechst. In 1994, he transitioned to a sales role for General Instrument/Motorola. Part of his sales career involved running the European go-to-market organization for the Motorola Home business from 2000 to 2002. Currently, Tom manages the go-to-market organization for Motorola Mobility Home, responsible for the North American Cable market.
