Dr. Robert Slater, The Language Partnership Group Board of Directors and Senior Consultant for Policy Research, American Councils for International Education

Dr. Slater is currently directing the efforts of The Language Partnership Group, Inc. and serves as a Senior Consultant for Policy Research at The American Councils for International Education.

Prior to 2011, Dr. Slater was Director of the National Security Education Program (NSEP) a major federal international education program established by the U.S. Congress in 1991. Dr. Slater was responsible for developing, and implementing all of the programs that currently constitute NSEP including: Boren Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships/Fellowships; The Language Flagship; English for Heritage Language Speakers, and the National Language Service Corps. Dr. Slater served as Director of NSEP from 1996 through 2010 when he retired from federal service.

The Language Partnership Group, founded by Dr. Slater, is a not-for-profit organization designed to build a successful public-private partnership around the concept of the Language Flagship. At American Councils, Dr. Slater works on policy related issues as well as co-directs a new major joint project with the RAND Corporation to study the relationship between K-12 second language immersion programs and academic performance in math, science and language arts.

Dr. Slater holds a Doctorate in International Relations from The American University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from St. Lawrence University.
