Norbert Hedderich is a professor of German at the University of Rhode Island.  He teaches all levels of undergraduate German courses, including courses on language variation in German and Business German. He is chair of the German section, and director of the Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantik, the University of Rhode Island's annual summer immersion program for German language and culture.

His scholarly interests include language teaching methodology, the German language, teaching language for special purposes, teaching language with technology, and intercultural communication. He has published articles in Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, The NECTFL Review, Global Business Languages, Schatzkammer der Deutschen Sprache, Dichtung und Geschichte and The Journal of Language for International Business.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
