The purpose of the International Engineering Program is to educate American engineers for today's global workplace.  At the University of Rhode Island, our efforts in this regard have been very rewarding:

  • The University of Rhode Island is educating more bilingual and cross-culturally competent engineers than any other university in the country.
  • Approximately 175 URI students are currently completing degrees in both engineering and language and culture.
  • Over 150 IEP students have completed six-month internships in German speaking
    countries.
  • IEP grads have all found excellent career opportunities and are in very high demand.
  • Internship placement opportunities with over 40 partner firms in Europe and Latin
America are available through the IEP.
  • URI's IEP, its students and faculty, have been the recipients of several awards from the German government, the German Academic Exchange Service, the the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and so on.
  • URI's IEP has been supported by grants from the U.S. and German governments, from several foundations, and from many of its partner companies.

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
