Dissemination Efforts

Given these successes at the University of Rhode Island, and given the strong, world-wide demand for young engineers with global communication skills, the United States Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education has designated the International Engineering Program at URI to serve as a national resource center for international engineering education.  This award comprised a two year grant enabling URI to carry out several activities intended to strengthen the URI program even more and to expand the concept of international engineering throughout the country.  URI's IEP has thus been sponsoring numerous activities over the past few years, such as:

  • An annual conference on International Engineering Education
  • Expansion of this IEP website  to include other efforts in the U.S. and abroad to internationalize engineering education
  • School outreach programs
  • Visits to the URI campus and the IEP House
  • Sharing of curricular information
  • Presentations and exhibits at professional conferences
  • Coordination of educational needs with the private sector

The International Engineering Program is a dual-degree program combining a B.A. in German, French and/or Spanish with a B.S. in one of the engineering disciplines.  IEP students study language and culture each semester along with their engineering curriculum. In the fourth year of the five-year program, they then go abroad as interns with engineering based firms in Europe or Latin America, and also as exchange students with one of our partner universities
