The primary mission of the Research Core is to provide financial, resource, and mentoring support for junior investigators at the six participating Rhode Island institutions. Specific goals for the Ph.D. granting
institutions, the University of Rhode Island and Brown University, include the recruitment of junior investigators, as well as funding and mentoring for incumbent investigators. At the primarily undergraduate institutions,
Bryant University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, and Salve Regina University, the specific goals for investigators are the training of undergraduate students, publication of results, and the development of sustainable student training programs. In addition, a pilot project program funds projects for one year periods to collect pilot data for external grant submissions and to train undergraduate students. Senior investigators are selected from the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, and other institutions to mentor the junior investigators. The mentoring program provides guidance in preparing proposals, submitting manuscripts, and in designing experimental strategies.
