Infectious diseases research rotation
During this 10 week rotation the student will be introduced to the principles of scientific research. This rotation integrates Biosafety level 2 training, hands-on laboratory instruction and research design. Over the course of the rotation, students will assist with the design and implementation of a basic research proposal in the area of infectious diseases, specifically with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The research environment that the student will practice in will be conducive to scholarly work.

Research projects include an in-vitro analysis of drug resistance, in which students will be responsible for project set-up, process and results interpretation; or a retrospective chart review, in which students will collect, enter and organize data from electronic patient medical records. Hands-on lab work will include bacteria isolation, streaking, verifying inoculum, plating, antimicrobial tests and evaluation.
