The majority of our
clinically used antibiotics derive from compounds produced by terrestrial
microorganisms. New sources for the discovery of antibacterial agents
must be identified in order to combat increasing resistance to current
drugs. The next great frontier for antibiotic drug discovery will likely
be the world’s oceans. This project will examine the antimicrobial
effects of molecules produced by marine bacteria. It is envisioned that
the project will involve elements of microbiology and organic chemistry.
