Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery from New England Plants
Plants have been used as traditional medicines for centuries and have provided several modern chemotherapeutic drugs such as Taxol (Paclitaxel). Currently, there are a number of un-investigated New England plants which offer an exciting opportunity for the discovery of new anticancer drugs. Our laboratory, the Bioactive Botanical Research Laboratory, has already collected several of these plants and have completed preliminary bioassays for anticancer activities. The objective of this project will be to conduct further evaluation of a selected plant extract using state-of-the art chemistry instrumentation and cell culture anticancer bioassays. This project may result in the identification of new and/or known chemical compounds with anti-cancer potential.
