Germany Today: Science, Technology and Culture
January 2 (5) - 18, 2015

For students enrolled in the rigourous five-year dual Bachelor degree International Engineering and International Business Programs, it is crucial to get some short-term immersion experience in the country in which they will spend their senior year. This program will allow students to experience the context of the German language and engineering/business studies.  Furthermore, it will give students the opportunity to explore the culture, technology environment and communicate with their budding language skills.

Academics:

Students must be enrolled in German during the 2014-15 academic year to be eligible to apply for this program. Students will earn 1 or 3 URI credits for GER 497: Directed Study. Students who participate in the travel component will earn 1 credit. Those who wish to earn 3 credits must participate in both the language immersion and travel component of the program.
On-campus language immersion component will take place January 2-4. Students will depart for Germany on January 5.

Course work will be supplemented with company visits to VW, Lufthansa Technology, Deutsche Bahn, and Bayer. Students will also attend city tours of Hamburg, Braunschweig, Berlin and Cologne. Students will visit research institutes at the Technische Universitat Braunschwig and URI's partner University in Germany. Additionally students will visit the Phaeno Science Museum, Chocolate Museum, and the Miniatur Wunderland and Maritime Museum.

Location:

Germany has the largest population within the European Union.  It is considered to be one of the historic leaders in many cultural, theoretical and technical fields.

Accommodations and Meals:

While in Germany, students will stay at Youth Hostels. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the hostel.  Dinner will be eaten as a group in a pre-determined establishment.
