Ghana

January 2014

     The Ghana Winter Study Abroad program will begin in Accra, the capital city, and then shift to the beautiful campus of the University of Cape Coast. The city of Cape Coast is the capital of the central region of Ghana. It is located 165km west of Accra along the coastline of the Gulf of Guinea. Here, students will study at the modern campus and explore the bustling and historic city of Cape Coast with visits to the ocean side, fishing villages and more. Students will have the exciting opportunity to learn and experience African American Studies in an environment which promotes both academic and personal growth.

Academics:

     Students can earn 3-6 URI credits for the following courses:

  • AAF 390 - African American Rhetoric (3 credits) or
  • AAF 390 AND LAN 191 - Twi language and African/ African American Studies (6 credits)
  • Students will be required to complete mandatory coursework prior to departure for Ghana

Housing and Dining:

     While in Ghana, students will stay in dormitory-style double occupancy residencies with shared bathroom facilities. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided.

Cultural Activities:

     Students will engage in cultural activities and excursions while in Ghana including:

  • Opportunity to tour Cape coast
  • Visit to the Elmina Slave Castle
  • Local art work (African Artisans)
  • Visits to traditional African Marketplaces
  • See and hear traditional African drummers, musicians, and dancers
  • Opportunities to aid humanitarian team in distributing items to nearby villages in the Western Region

Student travel visa Supplemental MedEx Insurance In-country transportation
