The Office of International Education and National Student Exchange (OIE/NSE) acts as the liaison between your home institution and URI. The office facilitates the following services:
- Exchange program paperwork
- Visa information
- Welcome and orientation services
- Course registration
- On-campus housing
HOW TO APPLY:
Students from Partner institutions, be sure to contact your home school exchange coordinator before you complete the application below.
For students interested in Study Abroad at The University of Rhode Island, ensure you have the signature of an academic representative from your home institution before submitting an
application.

ACQUIRING A U.S. VISA:
The URI Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) will issue a DS-2019 form for you to submit with a visa application to the US Embassy responsible for your country.
Before you are issued a DS-2019, you will need to provide URI with an ORIGINAL "Certificate of Financial Responsibility" along with your application. This form, along with visa application information, is included in the URI application.
You must also submit a legible copy of your passport photo page with your application. The DS-2019 will not be sent until all of your required application materials are received.
HOUSING OPTIONS AT URI:
While there are many housing options on-campus, we cannot guarantee that you will have the accommodation of your choice. Our staff will work to secure on-campus housing for all visiting students. Important: Although housing options are limited, we guarantee that you will have on-campus housing if requested. Your housing application will be processed after your admission to the University.
*Early move-in may be possible but is not guaranteed each semester. The Office of International Education will provide an orientation program and welcome week activities for visiting and exchange students prior to the start of classes. Participation in orientation and welcome week is mandatory for all Exchange and Visiting Students.
HOW TO REGISTER FOR COURSES AT URI:
Students can register for courses as soon as they are admitted as an Exchange/Visiting Student to URI. Review the Exchange Student Registration Worksheet for instructions on adding courses in e-Campus , URI's online registration system.
ARRIVING TO CAMPUS - WELCOME WEEK:
Most visiting students find that the University of Rhode Island is a very welcoming campus. Our office will assist you in your transition to campus life, including:
- Airport pick-up on designated Welcome Days
- Shopping trips
- Excursions and social events
PEER AMBASSADOR PROGRAM:
The OIE sponsors a Peer Ambassador Program where Exchange and Visiting Students are matched with a URI student to help with their adjustment to campus. Students that want to participate in the Peer Ambassador Program, should indicated their interest on the Arrival Services Form found on the welcome week page linked above.
