International Education Projects and Programs

The international mission of the University of Rhode Island is to provide a world class performance in higher education that translates into international research, internationalization of undergraduate curricula, and globalization of operations through institutional linkages and distance learning.

URI cultivates international cooperative agreements and projects that add breadth and depth to its academic programs, fostering the development of global values, multiculturalism, diversity, integrity, and the equality of cultures and nations as well as enhance the URI undergraduate and graduate students’ global competence.

Brief Description of International Projects and Agreements according to Colleges:

  • The College of Arts and Sciences sponsors the Chinese Language Flagship Partner Program and Faculty Led Summer and/or Winter Programs as well as works in collaboration with the College of Business (IBP) and the College of Engineering (IEP). 

  • The College of Business Administration in collaboration with the Department of Languages sponsors the International Business Program (IBP).  The IBP offers students an opportunity to include an international emphasis within their undergraduate business major and a minor in Chinese, French, German, or Spanish. The College of Business also sponsors the Global MBA Progam.
  • The College of Engineering in collaboration with the Department of Languages sponsors the International Engineering Program (IEP).  The IEP offers engineering students the opportunity to develop skills in the Chinese, French, German, or Spanish. Completion of this program leads to a dual degree (i.e., the Bachelor of Science in Engineering and the Bachelor of Arts in Chinese, French, German, or Spanish and a joint PhD in German).

  • The College of the Environment and Life Science grants URI credit to URI students who attend the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science (BIOS) and/or a SEA Education Association semester or summer session.  These programs target students majoring in marine biology, marine affairs, geological oceanography, and chemical oceanography.  It also sponsors a Faculty Led Summer Program in Peru.

     

  • The College of Human Science and Services sponsors a joint program with the College of Arts and Science in France aimed at students who study French and Textiles, Merchandising and Design; and the Physical Therapy Department sends interns abroad to various locations in Central American, African, Asia and various European locations.

     

  • The College of Nursing sponsors programs in Norway, Denmark and a Faculty Led Summer and Winter Service Learning Program in the Dominican Republic.
  • The College of Pharmacy sponsors a student exchange program in France and collaborative research in China, France, India, and Pakistan.

     

  • The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies sponsors a Faculty Led Summer program to China.
  • University College - The Office of International Education (OIE) reporting to University College sponsors 3 to 12 credits international internships (ITR 301) in Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Latin America and the Caribbean.  In addition, the OIE,

     

    • Organizes and administers the English Profficiency Test for International TAs
    • Provides orientation and immigration services to all incoming F-1 students and J-1 (professors, researchers, students and student interns).
    • Manages all International Faculty Led Summer and Winter Programs, and student mobility (exchange) programs
    • Coordinates the preparation of international agreements of cooperation
  • The Office of the Vice Provost for Urban Affairs sponsors Faculty Led Summer Programs to Belize, Cape Verde, the Dominican Republic and Ghana.
