       A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Oaxaca City is the capital of the Southwestern state of Oaxaca, a colonial city nestled in a beautiful valley surrounded by rural and indigenous villages. Oaxaca is home to the largest indigenous population in Mexico represented by 16 ethnic groups. The indigenous people are the stewards of the complex-rich culture, the environment, the arts, and the economic-political beat of the state.

       Oaxaca is an ideal location for students interested in studying ecological conservation, natural resource management, and environmental justice. Oaxaca is a center of the environmental movement in Mexico from where local, national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) advocate fus rights, environmental conservation, labor rights, fair trade, microfinance, and women’s rights.

Academics:

        This program is designed to foster global and environmental citizenship founded on the values of global interdependence and responsibility, intercultural dialogue, stewardship of the environment, respect for cultural diversity, and service. The program supports the following areas of study: environment and sustainability, sustainable agriculture, food security, indigenous culture, rural and urban development, social movements and women and gender studies.

Study Options:

  • Engage in international fieldwork in a developing country, Acquire the skills and experience to carry-out qualitative research in a rural or urban setting with on-site, faculty supervision.
  • Volunteer with a local or international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Oaxaca, Mexico. For a list of local or internation NGOs in Oaxaca, click here.
  • Develop Spanish language skills through independent study and cultural immersion.

Housing and Dining:

         Students will be responsible for lodging and meals. Lodging can be arranged with a family (includes breakfast), a hostel, or apartment.
