This two-week immersion program focuses on sustainable agriculture and food studies in Naples, Italy, where students will explore the Campania region that includes the Amalfi Coast and Islands, the rich agricultural area of Cilento, and the archeological sites of Pompeii and Paestum. Naples is the 3rd largest city in Italy and the most important port city in Southern Italy. Within its ancient facades, endless alleyways, and distinct neighborhoods, Naples offers a blend of frenetic, nonsensical goings-on that overwhelm the senses.

Academics: 

The Program will be based in the city of Naples from where students will venture out to the fertile areas of the Campania region. Applying comparative and interdiscipinary perspectives, students will examine models of sustainable agriculture and the evolution of food cultures. Students will have opportunities for experiential learning through a farm-stay, cooking classes, and other hands-on learning activities.

Students will earn 3 credits for APG 301H: Anthropology of Nutrition (Honors section), APG 301, SOC 497: Field Studies in Sociology; or APG 470: Problems in Anthropology.

Assignments include keeping a journal during the 2-weeks, summary essay, and/or action project proposal. Italian language not required.

Housing and Dining:

Students will stay in The House of Clerics Regular Teatini, located in the convent of the Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore, in the heart of Naples; a place of history and faith, art and culture. Students will also do a farm-stay with a sustainable agriculture project incorporating hands-on learning. Program costs include lodging, all meals, excursions and entry fees.

Cultural Activities:

Students will tour Naples' many distinct neighborhoods, open-air markets, coffee bars, gelaterias, and eateries and visit several museums. In the evenings, students can partake in the many cultural offerings from film, art exhibits, music, and dance performances. Local experts and practitioners will provide in-the-field lectures and demonstrations on Slow Food, food markets, and the fishing industry. Students will visit the farmlands of the Amalfi Coat and Cilento to learn about the history, preservation, and production of local products.
