Students will begin the program in Lima, where they will be able to tour and learn about the culture and government of Peru. From there they will fly to Cusco and settle into the accommodations at the CerviCusco Clinic. Students will set up a laboratory for cervical cancer screenings; which includes adjustments to the microscopes available as well as preparing staining equipment which may be a modified stain depending on available resources. After screening for five days, students will have an opportunity to tour Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Academics:
Students can earn 6 URI credits for MLS 590 - Special Problems in Clinical Lab Science.
Housing and Dining:
While in Peru, students will stay in double occupancy rooms in a hotel in Lima and at the CerviCusco Clinic. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Cultural Activities:
Students will engage in cultural excursions while in Peru including: exploring the city of Lima, visiting cultural and historical sites in Cusco, and an excursion to Machi Picchu.
