Selecting a Program

The Office of International Education maintains approximately 30 International Exchange Agreements in 20 countries. The Exchange Agreements between the University of Rhode Island and international universities give students the opportunity to participate in more than 20 student exchange programs in Asia, Canada, England, Europe, Latin America, and the United States (National Student Exchange) at a very low cost.

Moreover, through its participation in consortia and affiliation agreements with overseas providers, URI students may also study in more than 50 additional programs that include programs in Africa and in the regions mentioned above.

Questions To Consider When Choosing A Study Abroad Program

  • What type of courses are offered and how will they complement your plan of study and academic goals?
  • Is proficiency in a language other than English required?
  • What type of housing and meal plan options are available?
  • What type of support services (academic and non-academic) are available to program participants?
  • Will the program provide you with the contact information of previous participants so you can ask them questions related to their experience with the program provider?
  • What is the cost of the program and what does the program fee include?

Types of Study Abroad Programs

  • One-to-One International Exchange Programs
  • Based on availability, this program option allows students from educational institutions in different countries to pay expenses to their respective home campus and then switch places for a semester/ year.

  • One-Way Study Abroad Programs
  • These programs offer an opportunity to outgoing students only. Participants, generally, pay a program fee.

  • Consortia Programs
  • Consortia Programs permit students access to international programs offered by other institutions that belong to the same consortium.

  • International Internships
  • Students at URI can access many different types of international internships through the Office of International Education.

  • Non-Affiliated Programs
  • URI students may seek out a non-affiliated program because it offers a certain geographic destination or academic area that is not otherwise available through any of our many affiliations. Before selecting a non-affiliated program, read the "Information for Students participating in a Non-affiliated Study Abroad Program"

  • URI Summer Programs
  • We offer students the opportunity to study in URI-faculty led summer study abroad programs. These programs are designed to allow students to earn three to six credits towards their college/university degree.
