URI Summer Study Abroad Programs

The University of Rhode Island (URI) offers students the opportunity to study in six (6) URI faculty led summer study abroad programs (Belize, Dominican Republic, England, Italy, Greece and Spain). These programs are designed to allow students to earn three to six credits toward their URI or other college/university degree. In the case of URI students, many of the courses satisfy the URI culture and/or diversity cluster requirements; certain GenEd requirements in Humanities; and part of the requirements for specific Majors or Minors. URI Summer Programs are open to both URI students and Non-URI students, as well as both degree seeking and non-degree seeking students (including teachers, parents and other professionals). There are also a number of affiliated and non-affiliated summer programs available to students. Students participating on these programs should read " What URI Students Need to Know About Summer Study Abroad Programs."

Other Summer Study Abroad Programs (Affiliated and Non-Affiliated)

Students may also choose to study on affiliated programs or programs offered by an independent, or non-affiliated, institution. Any URI student who plans to enroll in a summer study abroad program, regardless of whether or not the program is URI-affiliated, should take the following steps:

1. Research and choose a program:

Some great online resources include:

Some great resource books you will find in the Office of International Education (OIE) or at your local library or bookstore include:

  • Short-Term Study Abroad by the Institute of International Education
  • Peterson's Guide to Study Abroad
  • Transitions Abroad Bi-Monthly Magazine

2. Consult your faculty advisor on the program's applicability to URI transfer credit and fulfillment of your academic major's graduation requirements.

3. Complete and submit all required application materials directly to the program sponsors.

4. Visit your Dean's Office to request a Course Prior-Approval Form, which needs to be completed, signed by the proper officials, and returned to your dean as soon as possible.

5. If planning to use financial assistance to pay for some or all of the program costs, you must also do the following:

  • Consult the Office of Enrollment Services Department of Student Financial Aid to determine eligibility for and availability of funds.
  • Visit the Office of International Education to request, complete and submit the proper forms for study abroad. (This will include a required payment of the URI Off-Campus Study fee, currently $219 and subject to change.)

Upon completion of your summer study abroad program, request that the program sponsor send an official transcript of your work to your URI dean's office for transfer credit evaluation.

The following summer programs, though not coordinated by URI faculty, are URI-Affiliated. (For details and to request application materials, please consult each individual program's web site.):
