Cape Verde, only slightly larger than Rhode Island, is an archipelago in the Atlantic, 385 miles west of Senegal (off the coast of western Africa).  With a total land area of 4,033 km Cape Verde is one of the five Atlantic Archipelagos of the Macaronésia.  The others are Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Cape Verde has a milder climate that is  tropical and dry. The standard temperature remains around 25° C.  One of Cape Verde's main riches is the sea, due to its very abundant maritime fauna.   Among the many permanent species of fish there is the dory, the sawfish, the victor fish, the moray and the grouper. There are also many migratory species such as the tuna, dolphins, whales, sperm whales and killer whales.

• NOTE: Students will be required to complete mandatory coursework prior to leaving for Cape Verde. For coursework that involves assigned readings, students will have to submit brief chapter reviews indicating what they learned from each of the chapters read. Refer to syllabus for more information about pre-coursework requirements
• 6 URI credits total; 3 credits for AAF 390, "Direct Study or Research " and 3 credits for AAF/PSC 410, "Issues in African Development"
• Coursework involves field work and daily lectures and discussions
• Throughout the course, students’ understanding of Cape Verdean history and culture will be facilitated through readings, films, classroom instruction, and fieldwork. Each student will prepare several focused writing projects on topics that address selected themes or problems connected to the Cape Verdean experience. Grades will be based on active participation writing assignments, and fieldwork.
• ***Graduate students must receive approval in advance from their home department and the program director in order to obtain graduate credits.
• Before admitted in to the program, an Interview (either by phone or in person) with program director(s) is mandatory
