The eight-week Chinese Summer Immersion Program begins on the beautiful
Kingston campus of the University of Rhode Island. Students and faculty live
together in a dynamic, supportive Chinese-only community. Kingston is
located just minutes from the beaches, 30 miles south of Providence, 75
miles from Boston, and 160 miles from New York City. On June 19, 2009 the
group will fly together to Hangzhou, China for the second four weeks of the
program. The group will arrive in Hangzhou on July 20 and have a
weekend to adjust to the time difference and acclimate to the new
environment. Zhejiang University will arrange orientation activities for the
group. Zhejiang University is located in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang
Province, just 115 miles southwest of Shanghai. Considered by the Chinese to
be a small city, Hangzhou has a population of around 7 million! It lies at
the southern end of the Grand Canal, which was constructed beginning in the
5th century B.C. and which links the city with Beijing. Hangzhou's most
famous feature is West Lake.
