URI IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
SUMMER 2009
July 6- July 24, 2009


Location

The Dominican Republic is in the beautiful Caribbean, sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and constituting the eastern two- thirds of land. The landscape is forested and mountainous, with valleys, plains and plateau. The soil is fertile with excellent beaches on the north, southeast, and east coasts, rising up to the mountains.
 

Program Fees $2,330

NOTE: All fees subject to change due to currency fluctuations/exchange rates
  • Tuition( lectures, site visits and 6 credits)
  • Lodging
  • 2 meals per day
  • Program related cultural excursions & activities
  • Program related in-country transportation

 

AIRFARE IS NOT INCLUDED

 

Academics:

  • First week of program will be held in the URI campus followed by two weeks in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
  • Pre -coursework and orientation before the trip
  • Two weeks field excursions throughout the Dominican Republic
  • Earn 6 credits: Choose Between: LAS 390 (The Hispanic Caribbean: Study Abroad in the Dominican Republic); PSC/AAF 415 (Dynamics of Social Change in the Caribbean); SPA 470 (Topics in Hispanic Literature); SPA 570 (Topics in Hispanic Literature and Culture)(Graduate Credit).
  • No previous Spanish language study required
  • Visa not required for U.S. citizens

Housing and Meals:
  • Lodging and housing arranged by director.It will vary depending on the location in the Dominican Republic (hotels, dormitories and guest houses)
  • Double room occupancies in various hotels & retreat houses (if private room is desired, student will pay the extra fee in advance)
  • Breakfast and Dinner will be provided
  • Meals prepared and provided Dominican style
  • Internet available at internet cafes, universities, and government labs

 

Cultural Activities:
  • Visit to the Senate and House of Representatives
  • Lecture on the modern political process in D.R.
  • Visit Museums and Historic Colonial Zone
  • Cultural presentations
