About Salamanca

History

Founded by the Romans, the city of Salamanca offers a resplendent setting for immersion in Spanish life, language and culture--the heart of the Summer Program in Spain.  Spanish will be the language of communication for all students during their stay in this tranquil city, internationally renowned for its beauty and historic, artistic, and literary traditions.

Situated in the northwest region of Spain (about 120 miles from Madrid and near the border of Portugal), this famous city draws students from around the globe to its academic halls, historic sights, vibrant nightlife, and the elegant Plaza Mayor.  Salamanca boasts the oldest university in Spain (founded early 13th century), as well as magnificent examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, century-old cathedrals, and monuments.

Salamanca is renowned for its beauty and historic, artistic, and literary traditions. It is the perfect place to use Spanish as your primary language of communication. Since its inception in 1984, URI's Summer in Spain program has drawn students from across the U.S. and around the world. We have taught students from URI and other American colleges, all choosing URI's Summer in Spain for the distinguished Hispanists who participate in our program every year.
