Welcome to the URI Office of International Students & Scholars

On behalf of the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), I would like to extend our warmest congratulations on your decision to join the University of Rhode Island community. The OISS works with international students, researchers and scholars throughout your stay at URI. We are available to assist you in becoming comfortable in your new environment.  We organize new arrival orientations and coordinate services with other academic and administrative units on campus.

We will help you with the areas listed below (and more):

  • Understanding and complying with the US Department of Homeland Security regulations
  • Understanding and complying with the Exchange Visitor Program
  • Preparation of Immigration Documents for you and your dependents
  • Understanding and accessing other U.S. and local government agencies services
  • Understanding and communicating with other URI administrative offices and services

After arriving in Kingston to begin your education, research activities and/or teaching activities, visit the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) to confirm your arrival, submit copies of your immigration documents, and inform us of your current address (in the US). Before coming to the OISS, we suggest that you download and complete the registration form.

If you are an international student at another university and want to transfer to URI, complete and submit the transfer form along with the additional necessary documentation to the OISS.

  • Newly admitted international students MUST REPORT to the Office of International Students & Scholars within 30 days of the beginning date noted on their I-20 or DS-2019.
  • Transfer students must report to the OISS 15 days prior to the beginning of classes.
  • Failure to REPORT to the OISS will be considered a VIOLATION of your visa status by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
