Welcome to the Office of International Students & Scholars

On behalf of the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), we extend our warmest congratulations on your decision to join the University of Rhode Island community. Located in the International Center at 37 Lower College Road, the OISS serves as a meeting place for many. The staff is available to assist you in becoming comfortable in your new environment. We will help you with the areas listed below (and more):

  • Understanding and complying with the US Department of Homeland Security regulations
  • Understanding and complying with the Exchange Visitor Program
  • Preparation of Immigration Documents for you and your dependents
  • Understanding and accessing other U.S. and local government agencies services
  • Understanding and communicating with other URI administrative offices and services

Once you arrive on campus, we need you to confirm your arrival. As indicated in the documents we sent you, all F-1 or J-1 arrivals (e.g., students, interns, scholars, and professors) MUST REPORT to the Office of International Students and Scholars/OISS within 30 days of the beginning date noted on the I-20 or DS-2019 to confirm their arrival, submit copies of their immigration documents and US address.

We recommend that you download and complete the OISS registration form before visiting the OISS.

For those students, interns, research scholars and professors transferring their SEVIS program (e.g., academic degree, internship placement, research project, and/or teaching appointment) to URI from another US academic institution,

  • Visit your current US school international office and request a transfer of your SEVIS file to the OISS
  • All SEVIS transfers students MUST REPORT to the OISS no later than 15 days prior to the beginning of classes
  • All SEVIS transfer research scholars and professors MAY REPORT as soon as they reach the Kingston campus

We look forward to meeting you!

Best regards,

Dr. Dania Brandford-Calvo, Director
