Social Security

 

 

Only F-1 and J-1 and J-2 with an offer of employment are eligible to receive a Social Security Card. The Social Security Administration must verify their documents and status with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the University of Rhode Island Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) before issuing a SSN card. A card can be issued within ten to thirty days.

To obtain a social security card, applicants must bring original documents (see list below) to a Social Security Administration Office in Rhode Island.

  • Social Security Application Form
  • Offer of employment letter or assistantship letter
  • Verification of enrollment letter from the OISS
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • I-94
  • I-20 (if an F VISA) or DS-2019 (if a J VISA)
