Color Plotting Instructions: No.30, February 2008
Note: The Designjet 4000PS is a new plotter; we will continue to operate the old HP Designjet 755CM for a limited time during the switchover.
Users with accounts on Grinder (UNIX) can plot graphics files from remote locations to an HP Designjet 4000PS color plotter in Tyler Hall. The color plotter is 42" wide and uses a continuous roll of paper. The graphics files must be in one of the following formats:
Postscript
HP-GL/2
HP RTL (Raster Transfer Language)
If the graphics files do not reside on Grinder, use an appropriate file transfer program (such as Fetch for Macintoshes and ws_ftp for Windows) to copy your files to Grinder. From Grinder, plot using the following command at the csh or ksh prompt:
lpr -P plot1 graphic_file_name
To check the status, use:
lpq -P plot1
Notes:
Plotter output can be picked up at the Dispatch Counter in the lobby of Tyler Hall.
Please use the plotter for the final copy of your output only, insofar as possible.
For large plots, it may be necessary to use the HP RTL format to avoid loss of part of the output.
To print from an application such as Photoshop on your desktop computer:
Download a driver for the printer (Designjet 4000PS) from HP and set it up as a printer on your machine. Select the "Print to File" port during the Wizard setup.
When printing from the application, select the HP printer and check the box "Print to File". You can scale the image to the paper size of your choice under the "Page Setup" scaling option.
Name the file as prompted and save it on your harddrive.
FTP the file to Grinder.
