Media and Technology Services (MTS)

MTS provides customer-facing support and end-user services to the University community. From assisting callers and dispatching technicians to working with faculty on instructional technology issues, MTS provides customers with an extensive array of support, media and communication services. Among these are high-speed campus networks, intercampus connectivity, Internet, modem pool, telephone, voicemail, and the Help Desk.

The University’s data network topology is a redundant three-layer design comprised of a core, distribution, and edge layer providing 100mb connections to the end points, and gigabit connections to the buildings. The network has been designed to accommodate voice and video traffic in addition to data.

A wireless network has been implemented throughout the University. It is built with over 600 wireless access points connected to the University’s high-speed data network.

MTS maintains a central Microsoft server domain environment that provides support for distributed servers throughout the campus. Running Microsoft Server, many of the 40 Dell servers provide critical functions essential for URI’s extensive distributed client-server computing environment; this includes Windows domain name services, virus and security update distribution, network monitoring, and classroom access.

MTS also participates in the design of physical and virtual learning spaces across the enterprise and manages and maintains classroom media, online learning facilities (satellite and IP-based), and the Digital Production Resource Center for faculty to develop high-end classroom content.

In addition, MTS provides licensed software distribution for both proprietary and open source packages, and manages and maintains PC and Mac laboratories on the Kingston and Providence campuses. These facilities provide access to the Internet, productivity software, and academic applications.
