Anyone with an account on postoffice.uri.edu must forward it to their mail.uri.edu account as soon as possible! The postoffice.uri.edu server is being phased out shortly!

See instructions below to get an email account on mail.uri.edu and to forward your mail.

Students

Your official University mailbox on mail.uri.edu is activated when the University receives your enrollment deposit. To start using email, just change your pre-set password (see below); and please read the following information about email:

Change Your Password!!

The pre-set password for your email account is your birth date in the form mmddyyyy; it is NOT your e-Campus password. Change your password immediately for security reasons!

Note: If you have not yet registered on e-Campus and selected your e-Campus user ID and password, go to www.uri.edu/ecampus; select First Time Users Register Here! One business day after you have done that, you can use your email account.

If you wish, you can change the pre-set email password to be the same as the password you chose for your e-Campus user ID; but remember, if you change your password, be sure to change it in both places.

Your email address will be in the form: e-CampusUserID@mail.uri.edu; for example, smith123@mail.uri.edu. You are now ready to send and receive email!

  • WebMail: Easy-to-use, Web-accessible
  • Outlook Express, MS Outlook 2003 and 2000
  • Server settings:
    • The SMTP server name is smtpserv.uri.edu
    • The POP and IMAP server name is mail.uri.edu

Re-Configuring Windows Email Software

If your Windows Eudora or Outlook Express program is already configured for another server, re-configure it for the mail.uri.edu server.

Forwarding Your Email

You can forward your incoming mail from any valid URI email account (ending in @postoffice.uri.edu, mail.uri.edu, or etal.uri.edu) to any email address of your choice.

Email Forwarding Policy
Many outside email providers require that all email be filtered for SPAM and viruses before being forwarded to their services. Therefore, URI will not forward externally any email that URI SPAM filters classify as SPAM or that URI virus filters classify as containing viruses. This email will be deleted.

URI will delete all email that it attempts to forward and the recipient does not accept. By selecting the option to forward your URI email, it is assumed that you understand and agree to this policy.

Request to Forward Email

Note: Do not forward your @postoffice.uri.edu account to @uri.edu! The correct forwarding address is @mail.uri.edu!!

Un-Forwarding Your Email

If you wish to stop forwarding your email, go to the Request to Forward Email page and enter information as follows:

In the URI Email ID: field, enter the ID and select the mail server of your original email account from which you had your mail forwarded. In the Email Account Password: field, enter the password from that original account and click Submit. If you don't remember that password, contact the Help Desk in the Library, LL 19, 874-HELP.

On the screen that comes up next, click on the box at the Stop forwarding email from... option and click Update. Your email will now be sent to your original email address.

E-Mail Features

The following space allocations are in place for the email servers:

mail.uri.edu
  • 30 megabytes of disk space for each mailbox
  • 15 megabytes per incoming or outgoing email message; this includes headers, text, copies, and attachment(s). Be aware that the size of attachments increases when sent through email.
For mail.uri.edu account termination policies, See URI Official Email Communication Guidelines, topic Email Account Termination.

postoffice.uri.edu and etal.uri.edu
  • 10 megabytes of disk space for each mailbox
  • 15 megabytes per incoming or outgoing email message; this includes headers, text, copies, and attachment(s). Be aware that the size of attachments increases when sent through email.
Accounts on postoffice.uri.edu and etal.uri.edu that have not been changed in 180 days may be deleted.

If you have exceeded your mailbox space quota, mail servers will stop transferring incoming messages to your mailbox and will notify you and the sender that the mail cannot be delivered because your mailbox is full. To make disk space available, delete messages on the server or transfer them to your harddrive. Detailed information on how servers deal with exceeded disk quota is available.

Faculty and Staff
If you need more disk space for your mailbox, please fill out and submit handout No.49, 'Account Limit Exception Request'

Virus Protection

The following protective elements are implemented on our email servers to prevent the spread of virus-infected mail:
  • Virus-infected incoming and outgoing email is discarded as it is detected.
  • To prevent spamming by compromised machines on our network, a limit of 100 outgoing emails per day is imposed.
To further minimize the chance of virus damage to your computer, follow these recommendations:

Go to our Virus Website to download virus protection software. Check the site regularly for updates; MS Outlook and Outlook Express are particularly vulnerable to virus problems. Go to our Security Website for information on security patches, testing your machine for vulnerabilities, etc.
