To create the animation on the left, the following steps were used:  A greyscale image corresponding to the land elevation (height) and Narrangansett Bay / Block Island Sound bathemetry (water depth) data was provided by Research Associate IV Roland Duhaime of the URI Coastal Institute.  The GIS data was then interpolated into a 3D model using Maya 8.5.  Greg Keirnan developed a 3D shader-pack in Maya which was used to shade the model, based on the height

and depth data.  The Maya animation was then imported into Adobe After Affects.  The Adobe After Affects movie was brought into the Avid Media Composer for final compilation.

The Narragansett Bay project combines 3D animation, video and website about the cultural landscape of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay.  The 3D models will include artifacts, a cannon, and sailing vessels.  In addition several artifacts will be scanned using a Roland Picza 3D Laser Scanner and RapidForm which has been made available by URI’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Department.
