Kick 'Em Jenny Website
Faculty:
Professors Steven Carey and Harladur Sigurdsson The STA team developed a web site devoted to the study of submarine volcanism, as an integral part of our course OCG 131, Volcanoes and the Environment. This new web site focuses on the evolution of submarine volcanoes in general, and uses the active submarine volcano Kick'em Jenny in the Lesser Antilles as a typical example. The web site contains a mix of descriptive and educational text, images and QuickTime movie clips. Dr. Haraldur Sigurdsson began research and monitoring of the Kick'em Jenny submarine volcano in 1972 and has made repeated visits there ever since. |

On one occasion he made submersible dive into the volcano's crater and collected a good deal of high-quality video footage, which is included in the web site. The volcano last erupted in December 2001. The web site introduces plate tectonics and the concept of subduction, which is when one crustal plate is thrust under another. This shows how the process brings about generation of magmas, and volcanism, to form an island arc or a string of volcanoes on a continental margin. Camtasia was used to provide a means for the STA team to show the site to viewers who don't have access privileges to the actual site. To learn more about Camtasia, click here. |
