Professors Steven Carey and Harladur Sigurdsson The Endeavor Expedition 2006 is a short animation designed for 2 professors. Professors Haraldur Siggurdsson and Steve Carey, wanted an animation to show what the island of Santorini looked like before the massive eruption and the subduction of the islands central area. Professor Dwight Coleman needed an animation for the Endeavor website that highlighted the different technologies that the crew aboard the Endeavor would be using to study the islands underwater geological formations. The two videos were produced at Fogarty at the 3D Animation Science Facility. The main application used was the 3D software Autodesk Maya. The island of Santorini was reproduced from a DEM (Digital Elevation Map) and imported into Maya. The modelling of the Endeavor, Echo and the Satellite were done by Greg Kiernan. And the Hercules model was loaned to us from the Graduate School of Oceanography. The main rendering engine used was Mental Ray and Maya Software, which took roughly 10 days of active computation to complete. The final still images were composited and fixed slightly in Adobe After Effects and then brought into the Avid Media Composer where post production and editing and sound effects were added. |
