Anyone possessing a valid University ID card may have it validated to borrow books. Rhode Island residents 18 years of age or older, with proof of residency, may apply for a Special Borrower’s Card at the Circulation Desk. The University Library is a member of the HELIN Library Consortium, which extends borrowing privileges to the faculty, students, and staff of the University of Rhode Island. Holdings of all of these libraries are included in the HELIN library catalog. Special Borrowers do not have HELIN borrowing privileges. All persons who have outstanding library bills will be denied borrowing privileges. Borrowers must have their University ID or Special Borrowers Card with them in order to check out library materials.
Borrowers are responsible for returning or renewing all items charged out on their cards. Borrowers are responsible for notifying the Library of any changes in contact information, including address, telephone number and e-mail.
Books, including some government publications, are loaned to borrowers for 28 days. Faculty and students enrolled in courses numbered 599 or higher receive a 120-day loan. Serials (journals, magazines, and newspapers) and reference books do not circulate. Fines are imposed for overdue items (see Overdue books).
The book(s) to be borrowed and a validated University ID card or a borrowers card are given to the circulation attendant who charges the book out. The date due will be stamped on a slip in the back of the book.
A borrowed book may be renewed if it has not been requested by another patron. Renewals should be made online or in person. Telephone the Circulation Desk at (401) 874-2672 if you have any questions. A book may be renewed three times before it must be returned. All renewals should be done prior to the actual due date.
Interlibrary Loan renewals cannot be made at the Circulation Desk. A request to extend ILL material must go through Emily Greene in the ILL office at 401-874-4613 (Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm).
Books held by other HELIN libraries may be requested with the Request feature of the HELIN library catalog. Requestors will be prompted to enter their name, library barcode number, and a pickup location. Please note: If there are any letters at the beginning or end of your barcode, do not enter them as part of your barcode. If the URI Library is designated as the pickup location, books requested through HELIN Loan will arrive at the Circulation desk, usually within one week of the request, and will be held for pickup for ten days. Borrowers will be notified via e-mail that the requested materials have arrived. Holders of Special Borrowers cards may not request books through HELIN Loan.
Books that are checked out may be requested by another patron by following the instructions for HELIN Loan above. When a book has been recalled, it must be returned to a staff member at the Circulation Desk by the due date on the recall notice. A fine of $1.00 per day is charged for overdue recalled books.
Searches for books not found in the stacks or on the temporary book shelves may be requested by completing a book request card at the Circulation Desk. When the book becomes available, it will be held at the Circulation Desk for ten days and the person requesting it will be notified.
Books may be returned either to the Circulation Desk or placed in the book drop located to the west of the front door of the Library. Books borrowed from one HELIN library may be returned at any other HELIN library.
The fine for an overdue book is $0.50 per day. Recalled books are fined at $1.00 per day. Cash, checks or money orders are accepted for payment of fines. When paying with cash, change may not be available for bills over $10.00. URI Faculty are not charged fines but are responsible for replacing lost items.
A book six weeks overdue will be considered lost. Bills for lost books are calculated on the basis of the average price of a book ($80.00) plus a processing charge ($20.00). Borrowing privileges are automatically suspended and sanctions will be applied by the Registrar until the bill is settled. Refunds for books found and returned at a later date are made with the processing charge deducted.
The Circulation Unit in the University Library, Kingston coordinates a number of additional library services, such as administering group study rooms and lockers, providing a lost-and-found service, handling building emergencies, and opening and closing the building.
A closing announcement is made 30, 15, and 5 minutes before closing. The buildings lights are flashed at these intervals. The Circulation Desk is closed for checkout 15 minutes prior to closing.
The Head of Circulation is Sandy Sheldon. Sandy can be reached by e-mail at sandys@uri.edu or by telephone at (401) 874-8635. |
