The April 2007 exhibit at the University of Rhode Island Library Gallery is 25 Years of Dragonfly by George and Pat Sargent.
This exhibit displays the diverse work of George and Pat Sargent in celebration of the 25 years they have owned and operated their Dragonfly Bindery and Studio. Alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design, George and Pat have run their full service hand bookbindery, specializing in antiquarian book and paper restoration and fine bindings, as well as an art studio specializing in graphic design, out of their studio space in Woonsocket. This show features several dozen bindings which use a wide range of materials, and which present examples of restoration and unique design. Some are traditional and influenced by older bindings, and some, such as Tuning Up, a limited edition of Robert Hamilton’s early drawings, are truly one of a kind and have been freshly conceived, designed, and executed with an eye to make the book itself complement its content in artistry. As examples of the Sargents’ work in their design studio, there are more than a score of musical performance and concert posters, many featuring local artists in local venues, audio CD designs, and George’s highly personal collages. From the temporary and very public display of posters which connect artists with their audience, to the highly personal interaction of reader with an exquisitely bound volume made to endure, George and Pat have consistently combined inspiration, unerring taste, and consummate craftsmanship.
The Library Gallery is located on the main floor of the University Library, 15 Lippitt Road, Kingston, RI 02881. Library hours are:
