The Bay that Binds Us:
The History and Environment of Narragansett Bay

The Coastal Institute at the University of Rhode Island is pleased to host a photographic exhibit “The Bay that Binds Us: the History and Environment of Narragansett Bay,” with photographs by noted Rhode Island photographer Salvatore Mancini. The exhibit will be on display November 1-20 in the University Library Gallery.

On Monday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Cheryl Foster, associate professor of philosophy at URI, will present a talk, “Same Scene, Different Lens: Reflection, Our Values, the Bay” in the Galanti Lounge. A noted scholar of coastal aesthetics, Dr. Foster will complement Mr. Mancini’s work with her exploration of ways in which Rhode Islanders view Narragansett Bay. Both the exhibit and lecture are free and open to the public.

For those who are unable to attend the lecture or view the exhibit, the Coastal Institute web site at will display several of the photographs and the text of the lecture.

The exhibit is funded in part by the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, the R.I. State Council on the Arts, the R.I. Foundation, U.R.I. Sea Grant, the City of Providence, Vincent Buonanno, and Nortek, Inc. Sponsors for the exhibit include Save the Bay, Inc. and the R.I. Historical Society. Additional funding for the U.R.I. exhibit is by the Coastal Institute at the University of Rhode Island.
